It was an emotional moment for Bafana Mahungela's father as he broke down in court after his son was permitted to interact with his family for a moment during a short adjournment in his bail bid at the Alexander Magistrates Court yesterday. Mahungela (21) had the support of family members from Mpumalanga who saw him for the first time yesterday since his arrest last month. He is accused of killing Kluyts, a Delta Park High School teacher during a 'MyRun'road running event, in Sandton, in October.
FAMILY
Mahungela's father who was dressed in formal clothes was seen comforted by two women who told him to stay strong because God knows everything, as he wept after hugging his son, before he was led down to the holding cells by the police. A few other family members were seen wiping their tears in the background. His mother was admitted to hospital after suffering a heart attack when she learned that one of her five children was accused of murdering a woman.
BAIL BID CONTINUES
As Mahungela's bail bid continued, the court heard via an autopsy report that Kluyts, who was three months pregnant, was not raped. This is despite the additional charge of rape that had been to his charges. The Varsity College student is charged with premeditated murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and rape in connection with the murder. Mahungela was instructed by his defence Advocate Itumelang Masako to read page 11 from an autopsy report which revealed that Kluyts was not raped."There were no obvious injuries noted on the external genitalia, labia, anus, perineal area and the vaginal canal," he read. Mahungela maintains his innocence claiming that he only stumbled across a dead body and his only crime was touching and taking the clothes of the deceased to remove his DNA. The bail bid continues this morning.
