Senzo Meyiwa's long-time friend, Mthokozisi Thwala, testified in the High Court in Pretoria that he was shattered as he held Meyiwa's hand and he was unresponsive on the night he was shot at singer Kelly Khumalo's family home in Vosloorus. Thwala is the sixth state witness to take the stand since the trial resumed two weeks ago.
Sobbing in court, Thwala explained that before they got to the hospital, he held Meyiwa's hand and the footballer responded and showed signs of life. "As we were going to the hospital, I held his hand to see if he would respond, and he did. Shortly after we arrived at the hospital, I held the hand again, and there was no response," he said. Thwala said he wasn't sure when Meyiwa stopped breathing because he didn't gasp for air but all he remembers is that 10 minutes after his friend was rolled in with a stretcher, he was pronounced dead.
Thwala also told the court that he wasn't comfortable with going to Kelly's home because he felt like he was betraying Mandisa, Senzo's wife. He said he was also friends with Mandisa, therefore, going to Kelly's home felt awkward. Asked by State prosecutor advocate George Baloyi why he felt uncomfortable going to the Khumalo house, he said: "I was also Mandisa's friend, so it didn't feel right for me to go to Senzo's girlfriend's place whereas I know his wife". Thwala explained that it was Meyiwa who convinced him to go, especially so he could meet his newborn daughter. Meyiwa was gunned down at the Khumalo's home in an alleged robbery, on October 26, 2014. Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli are accused of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and possession of firearms and ammunition without a licence.
