An off-duty Joburg Metro Police Department member was shot dead during an alleged tiff with the South African Police Service.
It is alleged that the deceased's son was pursued by an unmarked police vehicle for reckless driving and he drove home in fear of being hijacked. The mother then fired a warning shot but unfortunately, she was met with a hail of bullets.
In a statement, police said that they were patrolling Dobsonville, Soweto, after 10pm on Saturday night when they allegedly spotted a silver grey a vehicle which was driving recklessly. They said they followed the vehicle to Monaise Street where the driver stopped.
"The members approached the male driver who was alone and tried to place him under arrest. When they apparently tried to put him in the police van, family members approached and started interfering with the police," said a statement from the police.
A female went to the house and came back with a firearm and fired an alleged shot, the police retaliated and by firing towards the shooter.
"The shooter was fatally wounded during the exchange of shots. It was later discovered that the deceased is a JMPD officer. The driver was arrested for reckless and negligent driving and the other male was arrested for interfering with police duties."
