Prominent maskandi singer, Mroza Fakude, is said to be in hiding in KwaZulu Natal after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and broke her leg. Mroza, who made history in 2016 when he became the first maskandi artist to win the SABC Summer Song of the Year with his track Van Damme, is alleged to have become angry when his girlfriend of two years demanded that he returns her car.

BORROWING HIM CARS

The singer, who hails from KwaHlabisa in the far north of KwaZulu-Natal, is accused of assaulting Nosipho Mhlongo who resides in Boksburg in Johannesburg on Tuesday. Mhlongo, a businesswoman, claims that Mroza beat her up after she demanded that he brings back her car back. "I have been dating Mroza since 2021. Everything was going well between us until he changed in 2023 when he struggled to get gigs," Mhlongo said.

The car he won SABC 1 Song of the Year competition was set alight while it was parked outside his home in 2020 so she bought him a car so that he could easily move around Johannesburg for gigs and have studio sessions around the CBD."But he had an accident with the car I bought him late last year and the car was written off. At that time, he was booked to perform at Khuzani Mpungose's birthday celebration. Since we were dating and accidents do happen, he promised to have the car fixed but to my surprised he never did," she said.

HE WAS INVOLVED IN MULTIPLE CAR ACCIDENTS

Mhlongo added that when she realised that Mroza was battling to fix the car, she decided to buy herself another car. "He asked me to borrow him my car and I did because we have been dating for four years and I trusted him. Again, he got involved in numerous car accidents that forced him to take my car to a mechanic in Tsakane," she said. She added that their problems started when she demanded to know where her car was being fixed and he refused to tell her. "I had to involve Tracker and they managed to trace it to Tsakane. We then had an argument and he told me that we must break up and that he no longer loved me. I agreed but told him I wanted my car back,"

ATTACKED WITH A SPANNER

When she went to the address provided by Tracker on Tuesday, Mhlongo said she met Mroza at the mechanic and he attacked her. "He began assaulting me with fists. When the mechanic tried to stop him from beating me, he grabbed a spanner and started hitting me with it. He also hit me on my head and broke my leg with it," she said. Mhlongo is currently at a hospital in Boksburg and is being treated for her injuries and said she has not heard from the musician since the incident. "As soon as I'm discharged, I will go and open an attempted murder case for threatening to shoot and kill me," she said. According to sources who spoke to ZiMoja, Mroza has since left Johannesburg for KZN, fearing arrest. When Mroza was contacted for comment, he said: "Vo*ts*k! Ungi?jwayela kabi, (He insulted the journalist)" before hanging up.
