Maskandi singer dumped after demanding lobola money from record label

Menzi Mabizela says he is now free

Award-winning maskandi artist Menzi Mabizela has dumped his recording company Insika YeThonga over financial dispute. The Abamthathe hitmaker allegedly had a fallout with his manager and Insika YeThonga Productions boss Mthobisi Mthembu in December over the lobola money.

THE FALLOUT

It is alleged that Menzi demanded cash from the company to buy five cows to pay lobola for the mother of his two children. This did not sit well with Mthembu who told the singer that the company did not have money for such as they were helping him build two family houses. After failing to find a solution to Menzi's complaints, Mthembu apparently decided to terminate their working relationship, kept the masters of Menzi's four albums that he recorded and released under Insika and took the Toyota Fortuner which the company had bought for the singer. Menzi confirmed that he did ask Mthembu for lobola money as he was the one handling all his finances. He told ZiMoja that he was given R30 000 for the cow but his relationship with the record label owner was strained since then.

'I WAS FIGHTING FOR MY FAMILY'

Menzi told ZiMoja that he last spoke to Mthembu deactivated all his social media accounts and that he was forced to create new once. "I was fighting for my family. We would have had a bleak Christmas if I did not confront him about the money, I know I deserve. He only gave me R10 000 on the 23rd after I had pulled some stunts hoping that he was going to see that I was no longer happy.," he said, adding that all his hard work belongs to the record company now. "I'm left with nothing. I have nothing to show for the four years I spent working with Mtembu. The building process has been put on hold at home, the houses are not finished because he claimed that we did not have money. What's surprising is that I've been getting gigs and performing a lot in 2023. I find it strange that the company had no money. The company had no desire to pay me my money in December, yet they knew that there was a Christmas Day that required that we buy nice things for my family. It's fine, I don't want to make more comments on this matter. As from today I will be managing myself, the bookings will be taken by me," he said. When Mthembu was contacted for comment, he confirmed terminating their working relationship. "I don't want to talk about this anymore. Everything that Menzi told you is true," he said before hanging up.
