The police in Limpopo have arrested a man for allegedly assaulting his heavily pregnant wife with a hot iron. It's alleged that the couple from Seleteng village in Ga-Mphahlele had an argument about a cellphone when the 36-year-old woman was assaulted.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said while the couple was arguing, the husband plugged an electric iron and started to assault her with it and fled the scene. The mother-to-be sustained injuries on both her hands and she was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. "The police were alerted about the incident, and a case of assault GBH was opened against the suspect. He was swiftly traced and arrested the same day at Ga Mphahlele Makurung." Ledwaba said. Acting provincial police Commissioner, Major-General Jan Scheepers, pleaded with women to report incidents of domestic abuse and not feel sympathy for abusers. "You are encouraged to report these cases without feeling sorry for someone who abuses you," said Scheepers. The suspect will appear before the Lebowakgomo periodical court tomorrow facing charges of assault GBH.
Meanwhile in Bela-Bela, a 23-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder of his mother's alleged abuser. It's alleged that the suspect was at home when a neighbour came to tell him that his mother was being assaulted next to a tavern on Friday night. "He immediately grabbed a knife and rushed to the scene where he found the male victim arguing with his mother. He pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim on his upper body, and fled the scene," Ledwaba said. The victim died in hospital a few hours after the stabbing. The suspect was arrested at his residence and was charged with murder. He also handed the weapon he used during the murder incident. "The suspect will appear before Bela Bela Magistrate's Court on Monday and police investigation is continuing," Ledwaba added.
