Heavy rains and a devastating tornado that swept through areas north of Durban in KwaZulu Natal two weeks ago have left many homeless. The Inanda area, in particular, has suffered significant damage to its infrastructure, causing extensive damage to homes and power cables. Royal AM boss and businesswoman Shauwn "Mamkhize" Mkhize and her football team have extended a helping hand to the families and businesses that have suffered in Inanda.

A HELPING HAND

It was reported that over 70 homes were destroyed in the eThekhwini municipality and 110 were damaged affecting 552 people, leaving 151 homeless. The reality TV star and businesswoman along with Royal AM visited the area and donated food parcels. Beds, mattresses, couches, blankets, and essentials to the affected residents of Inanda. "What happened to those families is devastating and it’s important to help where I can," she says.

ALWAYS GIVING

Last year, the socialite donated to a community of KwaZulu-Natal by building 20 houses for the families who were left displaced and homeless by devastating floods after 15 000 homes were damaged and some swept away during heavy rains. The floods also claimed the lives of 435 people, while dozens more are still missing. Mamkhize identified land in KwaDabeka in Clermont and was in the process of securing it before starting with the project. "All I want to do is lend a helping hand and make a difference where I can. It’s not about me but about those destitute families. I don’t want to hog the limelight for this," she says. "I want to give hope during these challenging times. I am a servant of God and I believe that God has sent me to help them. I cannot imagine what those families are going through. Imagine having lost everything and now being forced to be accommodated in a hall. I can’t just fold my arms and do nothing about this situation."
