Lerato Kganyago and Skhumba to host the SAFTAs

The SAFTAs turn 18 years old

This coming weekend, the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) return for the 18th edition hosted by The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) at Gallagher Estate. Radio personality Lerato Kganyago and comedian Skhumba Hlophe have been announced as the leading hosts for the night.

AMID THE DRAMA

Taking centre stage are two hosts who promise to bring laughter and class, despite the organisation currently operating without a CEO and the NFVF council, which is said to have been disbanded in July this year. Lebogang Mogoera is currently the CEO of NFVF. South Africa Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, called out the NFVF saying, there is a big problem at the organisation that needs to be attended to. "It can't be that all the people in the arts are complaining,' he said. "There must be a problem. We must address that problem. We are here to fix things."

MAKING HISTORY

The SAFTAs start tonight with the Craft Awards then followed by the main event where Skhumba and Lerato will take centre stage with the theme, Back to Basics. "As we celebrate 30 years of freedom and democracy and 18 years of SAFTAs, it is particularly special to us, on the back of winning our first SAFTA as a business last year," said Relebogile Mabotja who heads up Black Swan Media, who are responsible for the show.
