KwaZulu Natal residents have been warned about the heavy severe rains that could potentially lead to devastating floods in the province this weekend. The province is currently experiencing heavy rains across coastal areas.
HEAVY RAINS
KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) alerted the public mainly from the coastal areas, from Port Edward to Richards Bay in the north of the province about the persistent rain which may result in flooding. According to the notice from the South African Weather Service (SAWS), persistent rains are predicted to continue until this evening. Cogta further warned that the municipalities that may be affected include, Ray Nkonyeni, Umzumbe, Umdoni, eThekwini Metro, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Umlalazi and the City of Umhlathuze Municipality. "The widespread showers and thundershowers may lead to flooding. About 40mm or more 24 hours of rainfall accumulation is expected along KZN coastal areas. Torrential storms were experienced in various parts of the province last night and today. All disaster management centres in the province have all been on high alert monitoring the situation that may require an urgent response," said Cogta spokesperson Sboniso Mngadi.
LARGE VOLUMES OF WATER
He further said that the Provincial Disaster Management Centres (PDMC) have been notified of some disruptive incidents, particularly around eThekwini Metro, uMgungundlovu and iLembe areas.
"In all these areas, there have been reports of large volumes of water but thankfully there are no significant incidents reported that may have resulted in displacements, injuries and fatalities. Emergency services are currently attending to various debris and fallen trees that have been reported by communities. The PDMC is closely monitoring all incidents and situational reporting from municipalities to ensure effective and efficient responses where necessary. The department is urging communities and motorists to be extra cautious and to ensure they are in safe areas during this time," he said. Residents living in low-lying areas or those situated near rivers are encouraged to monitor water levels. Mngadi further said: "In the event of an emergency, the public is advised to contact their nearest Disaster Management Centre to minimise the risk of damage to property and loss of life. KZN Cogta advises the public to take necessary precautions. This includes securing loose objects and avoiding crossing or driving through flooded areas."
