Jacob Zuma wants six Con Court judges who sentenced him to 15 months imprisonment recused

Former President Zuma disciplinary hearing has been moved out

Former President Jacob Zuma has filed a counter application to remove six Constitutional Court judges when his matter is heard in court on Friday. The IEC is challenging whether Zuma can serve as a member of Parliament, ahead of the 29 May elections. The IEC challenged Zuma's candidacy in the upcoming elections but the Electoral Court ruled that he would be representing MK Party.

Zuma believes the judges aren?t fit to adjudicate the matter because they were among those that convicted him and sentenced him to 15 months for contempt of court in 2021.

COUNTER APPLICATION

The judges which Zuma believes are tainted and wants recused include Mbuyiseli Madlanga, Steven Majiedt, Nonkosi Mhlantla, Leona Theron, Zukisa Tshiqi and Raymond Zondo.

He believes they are not fit because they presided over and adjudicated his contempt of court proceedings in 2021 where he was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment for failing to participate in a corruption investigation.

ON HOLD

Meanwhile the Secretary general of the African National Congress Fikile Mbalula issued a statement saying that NDC hearing against Zuma has been put on hold due to the security situation prevailing at Luthuli House.

?We are advised that activities, including disciplinary hearings, that attract large gatherings, are not advisable as they have the potential to result in violence, especially so close to the National and Provincial Elections scheduled for 29 May 2024. Accordingly, the ANC National Officials have decided that such activities should be held in abeyance until after the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, this includes the NDC hearing JG Zuma,?said Mbalula.

On Friday, MK Party spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, had confirmed that the former ANC president would be available on Tuesday to face the charges. He said, "I can confirm that Zuma will attend the DC on Tuesday at Luthuli House. The MK party will also be there, and we will be there in full swing picketing outside their offices. We will be in Luthuli to show support to the incoming president of the country."
