Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper and former captain announced that Itumeleng Khune's three months suspension has ended. The longest-standing member of the team was suspended in December for breaking the team's code of conduct.
SUSPENSION
Reports stated that Khune allegedly arrived at training under the influence of alcohol last year and this was confirmed through tests by the club. The club's management expressed its extreme disappointment and suspended him, stripping him of his captaincy and putting him on a programme that required him to stay off alcohol during suspension.
RETURNING
Kaizer Chiefs said in a statement yesterday that Khune has returned from suspension which started in December 2023. The team said he was suspended to allow him to complete a corrective program designed for him to meet set expectations for a professional athlete. "During his three-month absence, Khune fully participated in the programs set out for him and believes they assisted with his personal growth and development as a professional athlete as well as an individual," read the club statement. "He looks forward to working hard at training and sharing his knowledge with his team mates."
WELCOME BACK
In the last two months, the team allowed Khune to participate on the panel of SABC sports analysts during the recent Africa Cup of Nations. "The experience gained from the exercise will hopefully benefit his life in the future. As Kaizer Chiefs," they shared. "We welcome him back to the home he has known for over 25 years and we remain committed to our core values of discipline, integrity, respect, and unity," the statement concluded.
