One would expect him to be in the taxi business, open a butchery or even start a record label, which he has. But he chose to break away from the image of Maskandi artists by launching a perfume and cologne brand. His fragrance brand is the opposite of what you might imagine; they possess gentle, fruity, and woody undertones. Maskandi artist Khuzani Mpungose is the epitome style and has topped it off by starting his new self-titled perfume line. "Who said Maskandi artists can't smell good?" he asks during an interview with ZiMoja, adding," We also care about our brand and image."
INVOLVED IN THE MAKING
The Ijele artist came up with the idea in 2019 and launched an ice-blue fragrance with a guitar design. "This year, the perfume has done really well. We have for both men and women." He was involved in the process of creating the scents. "I was very hands-on in helping to build the scents." Khuzani says as artists it is important to be diverse. "I use my music platform to also help me get into other business ventures," he says. He plans to further add other products such as lotions and soaps. "I’m a businessman," he gushes.
SUPPORTING LOCAL
The fragrances are produced in collaboration with LiquidDope Fragrances, a black-owned company based in Boksburg on the East Rand. "I also love that I am working with our own people. Now everyone can afford to smell like me," he gloats. "I wanted to smell expensive at an affordable price. I want when I walk into a room or a venue to have all my fans smell like me."
