The Gauteng Department of Health has taken note of a fake message in a form of a screenshot between Matthew Lani, who claimed to be a medical doctor, and the department confirming that he's been cleared. Lani claimed in a TikTok post that the message was from official by the name of "Buhle" who asked him to send his legal names, ID number as well as his HPCSA number. In the screenshot, the message was followed by an apology to Lani from the official.
The department said the matter will be handed over to the police for further investigation. Lani made news last week when it was discovered that he was not a qualified medical doctor as he claimed on his social media posts. He had been giving medical advice and even granted interviews to the media. The Department of Basic Education issued a statement saying that Lani did not have a matric certificate and that he dropped out in grade 8. Though he claimed that he completed his medical qualification at Wits Medical School, the institution said that they do not have records of him. However, Lani said he acquired this qualification from Cambridge International College (CIC) certificate, but this was also denied by the institution who said they had no association with him.
After he was exposed and denied by the institutions, Lani resurfaced a few days later on social media trying to clear his name but his account was blocked on TikTok. The fake doctor who claimed to be the youngest doctor to own a South African pharmaceutical company created a new profile trying to clear his names with more lies that could see him in more trouble than he already is in. He used this company, Immuno Bloom, to promote his belly busting (Mokhaba pills). He also said he is the chief executive officer of an NGO called Greater than Aids and both businesses were registered under his name. Questions around his mental state have been asked as well and why he hadn't been arrested for masquerading as a doctor.
