Overcrowding!

GDE vows to move Theresa Park High school learners to new premises following overcrowding complaints

The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that they are aware of the rotational classes taking place at Theresa Park High School in Akasia in Pretoria and said they were working towards rectifying the situation. The school admitted over 1 000 learners which exceeds the capacity of the mobile classes that are currently being used by the school. The school operates using mobile classrooms which have been placed inside the yard of neighbouring Amandasig High School.

THE DEPARTMENT PROMISES TO FIX IT

The department's spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said the department has plans in place to address the issue of overcrowding at the school through a relief facility. "The department acknowledges that the new Theresa Park Secondary satellite school will be operating from Monday, 11 March. All issues raised will be addressed by the relocation team accordingly and the department would like to sincerely apologise for the inconvenience, Mabona said.

IT'S TOO MUCH

Parents protested outside the school on Monday demanding that the department fixes the situation. They complained that teachers and learners were frustrated by the overcrowding. They said over 80 learners have to take lessons in a mobile container with no proper ventilation. "There's no proper hygiene measures due to inadequate water and sanitation facilities which are shared by learners from both schools. Northern Pretoria is one of Gauteng regions battling with school shortages." one parent said. Parents also said it was hard to leave their children at home when they go to work not knowing what might happen next. They claimed Grade 9 learners only go to school once a week. The department said the learners will be moved to new facilities by the end of March.
