The police have arrested another suspect in connection to a child porn ring at a flat in Umbilo, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday. The 60-year-old man was found with thousands of images and videos of child pornography. Earlier this week, three men including a British national were arrested and charged with possession, distribution, manufacturing, accessing and downloading of child pornography.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the suspect forms part of the 27 online child sex predators that have been identified in South Africa by a joint international operation led by the SAPS' Serial and Electronic Investigations unit and the USA Department of Homeland Security. "This brings to four the number of people arrested by the teams this week. Three others were arrested in Gauteng. SAPS calls on parents to monitor their children's devices, such as tablets and phones, daily to prevent more children from becoming victims of such criminal activities," she said.
Mathe said the three suspects, aged between 43 and 63, allegedly committed a series of offences including possession, distribution, downloading, and facilitating the distribution, grooming and making available child pornography and exposure of a child to adult and child pornography. Among those arrested was a British man who faces charges related to bestiality after police seized material of him allegedly having sexual intercourse with a dog. "SAPS also encourages parents to install parental software and apps that are able to block harmful content on chats and apps," Mathe said. The first three suspects have already appeared in court and their cases were postponed for further investigation and bail applications.
