Justin Shonga has passed away

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Justin Shonga passed away at a hospital in Zambia last night after a short illness. The news was confirmed by Zambia Police deputy spokesperson Dan Mwale, who stated that Shonga died at the Sikanze Police Hospital. The Zambian Football Association also released a statement on their website, confirming his passing.

A SOCCER STAR

Shonga, who made 33 appearances for the Zambian national team and scored 16 goals, was only 27 years old at the time of his untimely death. He played as a forward for Najran in the Saudi Arabian second division. Shonga initially joined Orlando Pirates during the 2016/17 season from Nkwazi FC in Zambia and stayed at the Soweto giant for three years. Following his time with the Buccaneers, he went on to play for Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) and Cape Town City in South Africa, as well as Ismaily SC in Egypt, before returning to South Africa to join Sekhukhune United.

PIRATES MOURNS HIS LOSS

After his stint at Sekhukhune United, Shonga left for Georgia to join FC Garga in 2023. Shonga then parted ways with the Georgian side six months after joining the club. The Chipolopolo striker, who scored 16 goals for his country, then moved to Saudi Arabia to play for Najran in the second division. Pirates also paid tribute to Shonga. In a statement on their social media pages, the Buccaneers wrote: "The Orlando Pirates Football Club is devastated to learn of the passing of our former player, @Justin Shonga. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. "Rest in Peace #JustinShonga."
