The family of a man who was shot and killed in front of his sisters and nephews is living in fear after the ordeal. Ntokozo "Spirit" Shandu from Umlazi township, in Durban in KwaZulu Natal, was allegedly gunned down on Saturday night after three thugs broke into their family house and robbed them of their cellphones and a TV.

REFUSING WITH THE TV

According to the family, Shandu who was one of the well-known dancers at the famous Eyadini Lounge tried to stop the armed thugs from stealing the TV. He dared them to shoot him. His brother Themba Shandu told ZiMoja that the family was still trying to come to terms with his death. "We are still shocked about what happened. Knowing we will never see him again is a hard pill to swallow. Those people should have taken the TV like they did with the cellphones," he said. Themba, who was not home during the robbery, said the thugs ordered Shandu to unplug the TV from the wall. "I am told my brother refused and told them to shoot and kill him instead. He was not prepared to give away his television just like that and it cost him his life" said Themba.

SHOT IN FRONT OF THE FAMILY

Themba said that the criminals shot his brother in the head and on the chest in front of the family, including children. "We are now forced to organise counselling for the whole family as Ntokozo was shot and killed in front of them. Those criminals were heartless, they should have taken the TV and leave my brother alone. He was a good person who had no problem with anyone," Themba said. KZN SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said Umlazi police are investigating charges of murder and house robbery. " This is after a 43-year-old man was allegedly robbed and killed by three unknown suspects on 17 September 2023 at Malandeni informal settlement in Umlazi. The victim sustained a gunshot wound on the head and was confirmed dead at the scene," Netshiunda said. The suspects fled the scene with TV, watch and a cellphone. The matter is still under investigation," said Netshiunda
