GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY
Gwamanda expressed gratitude for being trusted to lead the city as the youngest mayor. "As the youngest mayor of Johannesburg I am humbled by the opportunity to have led this City and to have stabilised it financially and administratively following the collapse of the Multi-Party Coalition government."
He said was pleased that they managed to place good governance on course and that they achieved the best audit outcomes witnessed by the City in years.
"I shall continue to serve the people of Johannesburg as a councillor and will forever cherish the experience afforded to me in my tenure as the executive mayor. My story is one I am hopeful will continue to inspire many an African child from our City that against deprivation, isolation, social and political exclusion and with the absence of friends and peers in the Corporate and Media hierarchy, one can live and rise on the noble cause of changing the conditions of the poor," said Gwamanda
The resignation will be effective from a date to be determined by the Speaker, wherein a new executive mayor will be elected by the council.
A DIRTY GAME
Calls for Gawamanda to resign intensified after ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said his party was willing to work with ANC but on condition that the current mayor resigned.
Political parties called for Gwamanda's resignation following allegations of corruption, inadequate service delivery and the controversial R200 electricity surcharge impacting customers.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi previously said that despite the decision remove Gwamanda, they don't intend to burn any bridges with their coalition partners and they've agreed that the new mayor should come to from the ANC.
"You don't just abandon people because you have found new players, new people, or new political parties that are supporting you," Lesufi said.
As discussed with their coalition partners that the next mayor should come from the majority party, the ANC has endorsed Dada Morero as their preferred mayoral candidate. If the plan goes through, it would be second lucky for Morero, who served previously as mayor for a short stint.
