President Cyril Ramaphosa met with South African born American entrepreneur Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX to explore opportunities for Musk to invest in South Africa.

ALL ABOUT INVESTING

Ramaphosa is on an investment drive on the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly in New York, USA. Earlier, the President addressed a gathering of US and South African businesses and the Interactive Business Forum at the New York Stock Exchange and delivered a keynote address during a roundtable discussion. "We had a good meeting," said Ramaphosa, while shaking hands with Musk. "Absolutely," the tech billionaire responded.

A LENGTHY PROCESS

Musk and Ramaphosa's meeting comes at a time when the country awaits the launch of Starlink Satellite Internet Service in the country. There's been a lot of questions surrounding why the satellite has not been launched in South Africa which is Musk's country of birth.

Although Starlink is available in Botswana, Mozambique, Nigeria and Zambia, South Africans have been in anticipation for the service since 2021. According to Business Day, the President told editors: "I have had discussions with him and have said, 'Elon, you have become so successful and you're investing in a variety of countries, I want you to come home and invest here." Musk recently posted on X that Starlink is waiting for regulatory approval in South Africa.
