The minister of electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says Eskom's supply has improved and will be able to meet South Africa's demands. Ramokgopa addressed the media in Pretoria on Sunday, giving an update on the government's Energy Action Plan that was set up to curb rolling blackouts.

IMPROVEMENTS

Ramokgopa said there is light at the end of the tunnel since there's a visible improvement at all Eskom's power stations in the country. "What is important to note now is that we need to ensure that generation far passes demand and in that way, we will be able to pull out a number of units through planned maintenance. We are able to build a buffer so that as the South African economy continues to grow and recover, we have got enough generation capacity to fuel support and provide the necessary oxygen for us to be able to address the issues around the growth of the country and the degree in which you need a reliable power supply. He added that the gap between South Africa's demand for electricity and the amount being generated is closing. "We hit demand high on 28 June at 31,000MW, but now we are beginning to plateau at 29,000MW. We have had 16 hours of load shedding at 8 hours stage 3 and this is thanks to the hard work of people at Eskom as we aim to improve," he said, adding that the power utility is starting to balance out where the supply is higher than demand. "With the generation buffer, this will allow us to do planned maintenance," he added.

SHARING THE PUBLIC'S FRUSTRATIONS

Ramokgopa said he shared the frustrations felt by the public over load shedding. "My department has made progress in reducing rolling blackouts. We share the pain and frustrations of the public," he said, adding that he eats, sleeps, and breathes the resolution of load shedding and that he is confident that it will soon be resolved. The country is currently experiencing stage three power cuts in the evenings. South Africans have questioned the sudden change and ability of power generation to meet demand.
