A notorious con artist operating in North West, Buti Mtembu, has allegedly duped well-known TV and radio personality Skhumbuzo Mbatha out of a staggering R15 000. The incident dates back to about two years ago when Mtembu approached Mbatha, claiming to be in dire need of funds to secure a lucrative mining deal in Ghana with the government.

SWINDLED

Enticed by the promise of a share in the profits, Mbatha, who had developed a close relationship with Mtembu, decided to lend him the substantial sum. Little did he know that he was falling into the clutches of a cunning swindler who had been preying on unsuspecting individuals, robbing them of their hard-earned money. Speaking to ZiMoja, Mbatha, who plays the role of Meneer Manaka on Skeem Saaam, revealed that he had no reason to doubt Mtembu's claims, as their bond had grown strong and trust had been established. However, it soon became apparent that Mtembu was nothing more than a fraudster, leaving a trail of victims in his wake. The identity of another individual who fell victim to Mtembu's deceit has been kept confidential due to fear of victimisation.

HE WANTS JUSTICE

Mbatha tells ZiMoja that all he desires now is for Mtembu to pay him back. He says times have been tough and each time he raises the issue, Mtembu evades responsibility, leaving him frustrated and exhausted from chasing after him. "I am tired of running after him for my money; all I want is for him to pay," expressed a weary Mbatha. This incident came close to being exposed a year ago when Mtembu made a partial payment of R3,000, promising to settle the remaining amount. However, he failed to honour his word. Determined to seek justice, Mbatha has reached breaking point. He now contemplates exposing Mtembu's true nature, vowing to ruin his life just as he feels his own has been ruined. "He ruined my life; I can ruin his too," Mbatha declared with determination.

FAILLING TASHA COBBS

Mtembu, who was also a promoter for American gospel singer Tasha Cobbs in Durban, apparently failed to book flights for the musician and she was forced to cancel the show in the city last month. In her message on video, Cobbs apologised to her fans in Durban and explained that the cancellation was due to issues with the promoter (Mtembu), who failed to fulfil his promises and obligations. In the video shared on her socials, Cobbs mentioned that the promoter did not make the necessary arrangements, such as booking hotels and flights for her team. Called for comment, Mthembu said he will pay Mbatha in due time. "He will get his money am working on it," he said.
