Defence in the trial beefs up

Advocate Sipho Ramosepele has added a new member in his defence?team

The defence for accused 1 and 2 in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has added advocate Thulani Mngomezulu who will be dealing with previous and future evidence as the trial intensifies.

BEEFING UP DEFENCE

When the trial resumed today defence lawyer Sipho Ramosepele introduced Advocate Mngomezulu in court as an addition to his legal team.

"He will be dealing with evidence regarding the aspects we covered from Friday and also in the future," said Ramosepele .The court heard evidence on the admissibility of alleged confessions by two of the five accused. The state is in possession of statements where the two allegedly admit to the crimes, but the defence claims the accused were coerced and threatened by the police to make them. The state had called another witness, former Colonel Nhlanganyelwa Mbotho, who said he took down the confession by the first accused, Muzikawukhulelwa (Muzi) Sibiya. Mbotho told the court that Sibiya was arrested on the 30th of May 2020 in the afternoon around Tembisa, and he received a call that very evening from the investigating officer, Colonel Bongani Gininda, saying Sibiya was ready to make a confession. Mbotho said he asked Sibiya, "Has any person coerced or threatened to influence you to come and make the statement?" Sibiya allegedly responded,"Nobody threatened or even influenced me to make the statement." However, the defence is against this and believes that their clients were assaulted and forced to confess.

ANOTHER POSTPONEMENT

Mngomezulu asked the court for an adjournment so he can consult with the accused under his defence. "I am ready to proceed as from tomorrow as arranged in relation to the evidence of the magistrate, and I was going to bring an application for the recalling of Colonel Mbotho, who has already testified on Friday together with Sergeant Monareng." The court was adjourned until tomorrow.
