After waiting for a month and five days to receive DNA results, the family of Sizwe Cele, who died with his lover after being burnt beyond recognition at the Nugget and Commissioner Street building, can finally prepare for his burial. This after the deceased's uncle Msongelwa Mnisi received communication from the forensics department confirming that it was indeed their loved one kept at the Hillbrow government mortuary.
Mnisi said the family's agony will now be better knowing that they can bury their loved one. He told ZiMoja that they had been sent from pillar to post and were given false hope that the results would soon be released with no luck. "Initially we were told that we would receive feedback or the results after 14 working days from the day of the incident, but that duration had long passed without any communication. I couldn't give up because I know how slow our government departments work, if you don't put pressure on them, then your matter is left lingering," he said. Mnisi explained that they came to the mortuary to sign release forms to take the body back home to Mpumalanga. "We need to take the body to our own mortuary so that we can bury him on Saturday. We had already planned his funeral but were just waiting for the results which now came back positive." Mnisi described his nephew as a peaceful and hard-working person. He was a very jolly person who wanted to see everyone around him happy. He was also a hard worker who always wanted to reach greater heights. It's unfortunate that his four-year-old daughter won't experience her father's love and we've also lost a valuable member of our family, "he said.
Mnisi said as a family, they would continue attending the court case to ensure that justice prevails. "We have no choice but to see this case through even though we know that it won't bring Sizwe back. However, the fact the woman arrested for this case still has a smile on her face tells me that she is unbothered and not remorseful. Her actions took lives but she is unharmed and even the boyfriend she wanted to kill escaped death narrowly but here we are."
The accused in the matter Bonisiwe Gumede's defence attorney, Advocate Tutula Nduna. says her instructions from her client is that she did not start that fire. "We didn't know about the new developments in the matter. Our client is still not pleading guilty on the matter that's why she is not showing any remorse. The court still needs to prove beyond reasonable doubt that there is evidence that links Gumede to the matter," Nduna said. "My client has her own version and denies having started that fire. All I can say is that she is financially unstable. I'm even doing the case on a pro-bono basis. Even if I go now to inform her about the funeral arrangements, she won't be able to help or contribute. She is alone in this and her family wants nothing to do with her," Nduna added. On her last appearance in court, Gumede abandoned her bail bid and the matter will be heard again early March.
