DJ Sumbody's murder case classified as 'cold'

DJ Sumbody's killers were never caught

November 20th will mark two years since Oupa Sefoka, commonly known as DJ Sumbody, was gunned down with his bodyguard in Woodmead, north of Joburg. But, since then, not only has his case moved at a snail's pace, it is now being classified as cold, which means all investigations to try and nab the perpetrators have officially ceased.

INVESTIGATIONS ON THE CASE HALTED

According to sources in the police force, the case has been classified as cold because of lack of progress on it. "The case has been declared null, which means it has been classified as cold. This also means that the case will no longer be investigated until such time as new evidence comes to light," the source said. The police source explained how a case is allocated time, in which progress must be made or evidence brought forward. "Every case that is investigated is given a time period and when the time expires, it means the case will be treated as cold; this is done so that the focus can be given to other cases that are ongoing. However, although not prevalent, should there be new evidence, then the case is reopened," explained another source.

FAMILY IN THE DARK

DJ Sumbody's family said they were never told about the progress of the case, let alone that the case has been classified as cold. A family represantative, Meaghan Sebela told ZiMoja that they, as a family, had no idea how the case had been rendered cold. She said: "We don't know anything; we don't even know how far things are with the case, and this is the first we hear about the case being cold. We just want to know who killed him. It's surprising that a person of his stature can be killed, and the killers are not brought to book; this is disappointing." Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Mavela Masondo, confirmed that the case has been classified as cold. "The case is being treated as cold, until such time new leads are found," he said.
