He was fired from Metro FM in 2019 and 947 in 2021. Veteran broadcaster Thato 'DJ Fresh' Sikwane has confirmed that he will be returning to radio in the upcoming radio season in April 2025.
FIRED
DJ Fresh was fired in 2019 from Metro FM after using the word "Msun**y" on air, which he believed was not the real reason behind his exit. "I don't think I was fired for the word," he said. "I was fired because I refused to apologise for using the word. I was suspended for a month," he said. The SABC said he was found guilty and sanctioned by the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) for contravention of clause six of the BCCSA's code of conduct. The use of language brought the SABC into disrepute. "The BCCSA said there was no transgression because the word doesn't exist. Had they said apologise immediately, I would've done that, but you punish me first, and I must come back and say I'm sorry," DJ Fresh added.
THE RETURN
He lost the #FreshBreakfast show and later joined 947, but was also dismissed along with Themba 'Euphonik' Nkosi following allegations of sexual assault. "After extensive consultation, legal and otherwise, we have concluded that it is in our best interests to resume all of our public engagements," Primedia said at the time. The two have since cleared their names and filed cases of defamation against several people involved in their naming and shaming on social media. In February 2023, DJ Fresh launched his online talk show, WAW! What a Week which has gained over 55K subscribers. He has since confirmed that, after almost four years of being off-air, he will be returning to radio in 2025. Without disclosing the station, Fresh said he is excited for his return. "I will be back in April; I can't say where yet," he told ZiMoja. He said it would be a drive-time or a breakfast show. "I'm a radio-head through and through," he added.
