Couple arrested for rape faces new charge of concealment of death

The couple are also facing a rape charge

A Mpumalanga couple who are already behind bars for the rape of their 15-year-old daughter faces another charge of concealment of the death of their one-year-old son. The pair was arrested last week Tuesday for the rape of the teen by the mother's 43-year-old boyfriend. It is alleged that the mother helped her lover violate the child.

BODY DISCOVERED IN SHALLOW GRAVE

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli says during the investigation of the teenager's rape, the police found out about a shallow grave of the couple's one-year-old son behind the family's shack. Mdhluli said the community alerted the police after they had not seen the boy for some time. "Community members told us about their concerns because they were aware that the parents of the children were arrested. They wondered where the little boy was and sounded the alarm. Members went back to the house to do further investigations into the rape and also came across a shallow grave with a baby's remains," he said.

KIDS MOVED TO A PLACE OF SAFETY

He said the rape victim and her four siblings were moved to a place of safety. Police, at this stage, cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges against them. So far, police have learned the parents are not South African citizens and it is believed they are originally from Mozambique without valid documentation to be in the country. However, in this matter, SAPS is working collaboratively with the Department of Home Affairs to ascertain its status in the country. The pair remain in custody and will appear in Kabokweni Court soon for the concealment of death charge.
