Cop dismisses claims that they made several stops to torture Bongani Ntanzi

Bongani Ntanzi claims he was tortured by the police

It was another day of cross-examination in the Pretoria High Court for Sergeant Vusumuzi Mogane, whose version of events for accused number two's arrest was under scrutiny. Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu is expected to start Mogane's cross-examination later on how exactly he spent 18 hours with accused number two Bongani Ntanzi the day before the alleged confession on the 19th of June.

REASONS FOR THE NUMBER OF STOPS MADE

The defence questioned Mogane about the several stops he made when he was escorting Ntanzi, two days after his arrest in 2020. Advocate Mngomezulu took the witness through a logbook system entry of the 18th of June 2020 when Mogane and his colleague, the late Steven Mabena, transported Ntanzi to his then workplace in Carletonville. Mngomezulu told him that, " while you were on the N12, it shows that the ignition went off at the Protea Industrial Park in the City of Johannesburg."

Mogane said he remembered very well why that happened. "I was checking the tyres because there's a Sasol garage before the Krugersdorp turn-off," responded Mogane. According to Ntanzi, it was during the several stops that the police made especially at the petrol station where he was allegedly beaten and suffocated to force him to confess to his involvement in Meyiwa's murder. Mngomezulu asked Mogane about another stop, which was over 20 minutes. "As I was driving after checking the tyres, I smelled some smoke coming out of the car and went into another filling station to check what was happening. Upon inspecting the vehicle, I found that the car had issues," said Mogane adding that when he opened the bonnet, he saw that the oil was low. "I filled up the engine with oil and started the vehicle, but when I tried driving away, the wheels were stiff. I then switched it off for a while to cool off; hence, I stopped a bit longer," he said.

TORTURE CLAIMS

Mogane's testimony comes after Ntanzi claimed that he was electrocuted, beaten and suffocated to force him to confess to Senzo Meyiwa's murder. Ntanzi's defence told the court that their client was tortured at different locations. The data from automatic vehicle location (AVL) recordings presented in court showed the vehicle moved between Alberton and Germiston for about four hours. The trial continues this morning.
