Joburg City Power is not sure when power will be restored in some affected parts of the city, but the outage is likely to last until next week. They apologised for the inconvenience caused by the power outage due to Wednesday's fire along the M1 double-decker bridge near the inner city.
The outage occurred when the utility's underground cables caught fire along the M1 double-decker bridge. City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, who said that they suspect cable theft, explained that technicians were on site assessing the damage. "But we don't foresee us doing most of the work today, but we will push. The ETR is not even going to be tomorrow. We apologise to residents for this."
Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said their team is still continuing with assessments on the M1 highway, near the city centre. On Thursday, residents around the highway panicked when they saw smoke from the highway, however, Mulaudzi said the smoke was not coming from the same area where the tunnels that caught fire on Wednesday are located. "The smoke is on the other side of the highway where there is an informal settlement. Maybe they are cooking something, I wouldn't know, but it's not along the tunnel," he said.
