Cholera still spreading and health department says there's no telling when it will stop

Limpopo has recorded its first cholera case

The Department of Health has warned the public to be more cautious as cholera keeps spreading to other provinces. Since the outbreak earlier this month, 23 people have died from the disease in Gauteng and one in the Free State. North West province has recorded two active cases, Limpopo one, and seven in the Free State. So far, no death has been recorded in the last 24 hours, with Gauteng reporting 23 new cases. Meanwhile, the Department of Health in Gauteng confirmed that as of 29 May 2023, 77 patients were still admitted for the disease in Hammanskraal. "It is worth noting that 29 patients have since recovered and were discharged," spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said.

NO PATTERN

The City of Tshwane Health's acting Chief Operating Officer, Kwena Nkoko, said they had not observed any trends since the outbreak. "What is giving us a promise is that in the last 24 hours, we did not record any further deaths. Health officials have been struggling with contact tracing in Hammanskraal because people did not provide their physical addresses." Nkoko said.

LIMPOPO KNEW IT WAS COMING

Limpopo province has recorded its first case. The case was confirmed at Musina Hospital where a 26-year-old Zimbabwean national was admitted with extreme diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. He was isolated and treated, while specimens were sent to the NICD for testing. "We are calling upon all our communities to remain calm and vigilant by practicing basic hygiene, hand washing, and drinking safe water," said MEC Phophi Ramathuba. She said the department is strengthening its outbreak response work by means of surveillance and also conducting health promotions working with local stakeholders in the hotspots area, including the Beitbridge border posts. The department has also met with the Vhembe District Municipality about the need to regularly conduct water tests as a preventative measure.
