The Cholera death toll has risen to 32. This is after one more person died of the bacteria in Free State. The Department of Health in the province confirmed that a 42-year-old woman from Parys died due to cholera. This is the second cholera death in the province. In a statement, the department said the woman died on Thursday after being admitted at Boitumelo Hospital in Kroonstad.
DEATH ATTRIBUTED TO CHOLERA
A spokesperson for the Department of Health in Free State, Mondli Mvambi said the patient's death was confirmed to have been due to cholera after laboratory tests were conducted on her. MEC for Health in the province, Mathabo Leeto sent her condolences to the family and said officials from her department visited the family yesterday to break the news. "The department would like to take this opportunity to urge the public to believe information about causes of death that are confirmed by laboratory tests and not opinions that are not scientifically supported by facts," Leeto said
MORE CASES DETECTED
On Thursday, a spokesperson for the Department of Health Foster Mohale, said so far more than 600 people with suspected cholera symptoms have been seen in Gauteng and Free State hospitals. "Response outbreak teams have reached over 300 contacts and continue to hand out hygiene packs to affected communities. The department has also set up the Kanana Cholera Treatment Centre in Hammanskraal, the epicentre of the outbreak. Over 200 people have been seen at this makeshift hospital. The facility has been operating 24/7 since May 26," Mohale said the majority of cases were recorded in Gauteng which accounts for at least 152 cases, two in Free State and the remainder in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the North West.
