Celebrity designer tells of terror after robbers clean out his fashion studio

Thando Philiso urges anyone with information to come forward as he is willing to pay a reward for information

Popular Gqeberha-based designer became the latest crime statistic after thieves broke into his studios and stole over R200 000 worth of clothes. This included his clients' private orders, expensive imported sewing machines, and a Haute couture collection he was working on for Accra Fashion Week in Ghana.

STILL IN SHOCK

Thando Philiso (35) who has dressed celebrities like Somizi Mhlongo, Amanda Black, Nomcebo Zikode, and Zikhona Sodlaka says he felt like he was having a bad dream or someone was pulling a prank on him when the owner of the building where his studio is called him about the incident. The robbery which took place on Monday night has left the designer and his team in a state of shock and despair. "To be honest I don't have hopes of getting the clothes back, but I would like to know where those who stole them are planning to wear them. Who wears high fashion and long trail dresses in Gqheberha," he asked.

The incident has been a major blow to the designer, who has been working tirelessly for months to put on a spectacular show in Accra, Ghana. To add salt to the wound, he also lost all the matric dance dresses he made for his clients. "My entire collection is now gone, leaving me with no other option but to work from a private spot that will only be traced to private clients for the time being. My fashion brand employs over 30 staff members across the country, including 20 part-time models, and this is my only source of living," said Thando.

OFFERING A REWARD

The incident has also had a significant emotional impact on Thando who is at home recovering from the trauma caused by the robbery. "As soon as I heard the news, I fainted and luckily my assistant was next to me when I woke up in the doctor's room," he adds. Despite the setback, Thando is dusted up and continues with his work. "I have clients to please and serve with the best possible service, I have to make plans and find another studio in the meantime," he adds. Thando says he is willing to pay whoever has any information leading to the arrest of the thief or thieves. "We urge anyone with information on the robbery to come forward and assist the authorities in their investigation. Contact the Sidwell police station or myself directly and I will reward them handsomely," he says. Thando has opened a case with the authorities, but it remains unclear if the stolen goods will be recovered in time for the show in Ghana.
