Mzansi's Double Olympic 800m champion Caster Semenya (32) has won her case at the European Court of Human Rights, against Switzerland. The court has ruled that she is a victim of discrimination after being classed as having "differences in sexual development." Caster refused to take testosterone-lowering drugs as ordered by the sport's international federation, World Athletics.

GENDER TESTS

Gender tests conducted on Caster reportedly have a condition known as hyperandrogenism. The tests showed that she had no womb or ovaries but had internal testes, the male sexual organs which produce testosterone, and her levels of the hormone were three times that usually expected in a female. This means she also has higher than usual levels of testosterone. Caster was reported to have offered to show her vagina to athletics officials when she was 18 to prove she was female. "They thought I had a dick, probably," Caster shared in an interview with HBO. "I told them: 'It's fine. I'm a female, I don't care. If you want to see I'm a woman, I will show you, my vagina."

TAKING A STAND

Caster marveled fans in 2009 when she won the women's 800m world title by a stunning margin, just hours after the sport's world governing body said she would undergo gender verification tests. In 2011, she took medication after World Athletics ruled that all female athletes with hyperandrogenism had to medically lower their testosterone levels. Caster said the medication made her ill. "It made me sick and made me gain weight. I had panic attacks. I don't know if I was ever going to have a heart attack. It's like stabbing yourself with a knife every day. But I had no choice. I'm 18, I want to run, I want to make it to the Olympics, that's the only option for me."
