GAUTENG: Two suspects, including an employee of the Emfuleni Municipality in Vaal, were arrested in a multi-disciplinary sting operation in Sharpeville following information received about people involved in extortion in the Vaal area. The police in said that information was received from the Modus Operandi Centre and operationalised by a multi-disciplinary team.
The multi-disciplinary team arranged an authorised meeting with the suspects during which money was exchanged. Immediately after the transaction, the suspects were arrested and the trap money was recovered as well as in their vehicle. The pair aged 39 and 51 are in custody facing charges of extortion pending their first court appearance whilst the investigation continues.
GAUTENG: The Protea Regional Court has sentenced Clement Moloi (38) to life imprisonment for the kidnapping, rape and assault GBH of a 40-year-old woman from Lenasia. The incident happened on the 21st of September 2018 in Lehae, where Moloi attacked a 40-year-old woman in Lenasia with an iron rod, causing injuries that required a five day hospitalisation.
Moloi forcibly took the victim to his residence and subjected her to repeated sexual assault. The victim identified the location of the assault and Moloi's home, leading to his arrest. Notably, one of the victim's shoes was found at the gate of Moloi's house and the other inside the room where the assault occurred.
The NPA said despite pleading not guilty and claiming the intercourse was consensual, the court found Moloi guilty on all charges.
In addition to the life sentence, Moloi received a three-year sentence for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and a five-year sentence for kidnapping.
Furthermore, the prosecutor highlighted that the victim still bears the physical and emotional scars of the assault, as she has yet to fully recover from her injuries.
WESTERN CAPE: Police in the Western Cape are investigating a mass shooting that took place in Nyanga on Wednesday afternoon in Browns Farm at a local barber shop. The provincial police said members of the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit have launched a manhunt for four suspects believed to be behind the mass shooting.
"A manhunt has been initiated for the four suspects who took the lives of three males aged between 18 and 21 and the attempt to kill five others this afternoon. An initial investigation has revealed that four armed men approached the eight victims at around 1.15pm at the barbershop, where two were shot and killed on the scene. Six men were admitted to the hospital, and upon arrival, a third male succumbed to death due to the extent of his injuries," said the police. Police said the motive for the shooting incident may have been an act of revenge.
