Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi (95) has been discharged from. hospital after spending over a month in hospital. The founder of Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) had been admitted to hospital since the end of July after complaining of back problems.

His stay at the hospital was prolonged when Buthelezi was accidentally burnt in his ICU bed when nurses gave him a hot water bottle to warm him up, but it ended bursting and burning his arm. In a statement released by his family, they say uMntwana, referring to the Prince, "will now continue his recovery and recuperation outside of hospital."

STATEMENT RAISES EYEBROWS

But the statement from Buthelezi's office raised the eyebrows as they thank President Cyril Ramaphosa and other former rresidents, except for Jacob Zuma.

The statement reads in part, "First and foremost, we would like to thank in particular His Majesty King MisuZulu kaZwelithini, His Excellency the President of the Republic Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, former Presidents Mr Thabo Mbeki and Mr Kgalema Motlanthe, the Deputy President Mr Paul Mashatile, the Archbishop Thabo Makgoba and their families, the President of the IFP Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa and the entire IFP family, AmaKhosi, and the Buthelezi clan for their love and support during this extremely difficult time for our family." The statement then continues:" We wish to also, once more, thank every South African for all your prayers and well wishes.

"It has really been this outpouring of love that has carried uMntwana (The Prince) to a point where he is now healthy enough to be discharged from hospital.

"In addition, it would be remiss of us not to thank the nation and media at large, for the beautiful tributes that were paid to uMntwana on the occasion of his 95th birthday on 27 August 2023."

SPACE AND TIME TO FULLY RECOVER

Buthelezi, who is a member of the National Assembly, will not be able to attend to duties in Parliament, since he will be home, recuperating.

The statement said:" He will not be able to meet with delegations at KwaPhindangene or his different offices, or resume his busy diary as yet.

"We appeal again that we allow him further time and space to fully recover, to regain his full strength, whereafter we will make an announcement as to when he is ready to

return to some of his duties and responsibilities. We once more wish to thank the medical team who looked after him - the specialists, doctors and nurses. As well as uMntwana's security detail who were by his side day and night. Words cannot express our gratitude. uMntwana will now continue his recovery and recuperation outside of hospital.
