Businessman accuses bodyguard of going off with wedding ring worth R400K

Gregory Wings wants his ring back from David Da Sousa

Businessman and real estate developer Gregory Wings is heartbroken after sending his former bodyguard, David De Sousa, to replace a diamond on his wedding ring and has not returned with it. The ring worth R400 000 and is a precious piece.

BRING BACK THE RING

According to a close friend to Gregory, he sent the bodyguard, who has since been dismissed, to add a diamond to his precious jewel but he has not returned with the ring. "He paid the jewellery store and everything was done from Gregory's side, David was meant to collect the ring and he went MIA," the source says.

Upon contacting the jewellery store with proof of purchase from a USA store including several pictures of Gregory wearing the ring, and communication asking David to take the ring for service, the jewellers could not release the ring as it needed David to collect. "They cannot release the ring for safety reasons, it makes sense. But Gregory has proven beyond reasonable doubt that he is the owner of the ring."

The businessman is said to have trusted David with his life - hence hiring him as a bodyguard. "He had to let him go for lack of trust and loyalty but he must bring back the wedding ring, it?s very sentimental to Gregory and his wife." Gregory tells ZiMoja that the matter is with the police. "I have opened a case of theft at Sandton Police Station and will be handling the matter legally. The ring does not belong to him, he has never set foot in the US to have bought the ring. It's very precious to my family and he has no right to withhold it. It's with the authorities."Police confirmed that a case has indeed been opened and are investigating.

DAVID'S SIDE

An infuriated David tells ZiMoja that he indeed took the ring for a diamond replacement, and he has not gone to collect it out of spite. "Gregory is toxic!? he says adding that, "He is an evil person. There's too much animosity, arguing all the time and beef with everyone. I worked for him in March and the whole of April. After we had a fallout due to a car hire incident in Cape Town, I decided to stop working for him because he is evil, he paid me the two weeks I worked in March and did not pay me my salary of R39 000 for April inclusive of public holidays."

GO COLLECT IT YOURSELF

David says, he is the only person who can collect the ring from the jeweller as it was under his name for replacement, and he will not do it until Gregory pays him his money. "Why should I put the effort of going to collect the ring of someone who doesn't care about me?" David asks. "I worked for my livelihood. I don't like drama; I am a professional and sign contracts before working with anyone stating that I will protect them and never steal. But he chose to steal from me by not paying me for my work. I refuse to go collect it because he owes me money." David plans to take the matter to the CCMA. "I am going the legal route to the CCMA. He needs to pay me. I left because I hated the work environment, it was so toxic and was starting to affect my mental health."
