An accident involving a bus and a truck has claimed the lives of eight mineworkers after the bus carrying the deceased was allegedly recklessly overtaking on the R555 in Steelpoort, just outside Burgersfort, in Limpopo.

The Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson in Limpopo, Tidimalo Chuene, explained that the tragic incident happened when the mineworkers were on their way to work at a brick manufacturing company in the area.

"The mineworkers were being driven in the truck when it was hit by the speeding bus," said Chuene.

Meanwhile, Vongani Chauke, spokesperson for Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani,said that Radzilani has expressed sadness following the bus crash.

"MEC Radzilani has sent messages of condolences and comfort, to the families of the victims of this fatal accident.She had also made a clarion call to motorists to drive with caution and observe traffic rules at all times," he added.

Meanwhile Arrive Alive reported that In the last 24 hours several fatal accidents have been reported in Limpopo and all of these fatal accidents have been driver error.

-On the R8, next to Pola Park, Bolobedu, a driver lost control of VW golf and overturned one passenger was deceased and the driver got slight injuries

-At about 03h40 a pedestrian was killed in a hit and run crash on the N11 near Marble Hall

-On the D21 at Sekororo Hospital in Mopani ,the driver of a Corolla lost control on high speed and overturned. The driver died and one passenger sustained serious injuries and the other five passengers suffered slight injuries.

-On the R81, near Munnik, the driver of a Toyota overtook on barrier line facing oncoming traffic and sideswiped a truck. two passengers died and the driver and four passengers are in a serious condition.

-At Rietfontein village, Waterberg, a VW polo crashed into a vehicle at the back and the passenger died in hospital while the driver is in a very serious condition.

-On the R81 Maphalle village Bolobedu an off-duty police member was walking when they got hit by a car and died.
