Brickz turns to gospel music to survive his time behind bars

Brickz continues to make music behind bars

He is currently serving time years behind bars for 15 years after being found guilty of raping his 16-year-old niece at his Ruimsig home in 2013. Kwaito musician Sipho "Brickz” Ndlovu who blew to fame and sang mostly about mjolo, money, girls, and parties has now turned to gospel music while serving his sentence.

THE ORDEAL

The magistrate shared the testimony from the victim that she bled after the incident and her hymen broke, as she was a virgin at the time, and she was in severe pain. The victim had been told by Brickz to take a bath after the rape ordeal and he had threatened to kill her if she told anyone. He also said the victim was not aware that she had been infected with a sexually transmitted disease. She said that after the ordeal, she wanted to end her life as she was fearful of the musician.

NOT REMORSEFUL

His family welcomed his sentencing and said he needed to pay for "his sins.” The victims’ father known as Bab’ Ngwenya said the family had lost hope and given up on the law until he was sentenced. But when he was found guilty, they were happy that justice was served. Bab’ Ngwenya said during his trial, Brickz showed no remorse for his actions and refused to apologise when he was told to visit the family to ask for forgiveness from the victim.

TURNING TO THE LORD

A friend that has visited the musician this year tells ZiMoja that he is looking and feeling positive. â€?"He is very remorseful and serving his time the best way he knows how,” he says. â€?"In the beginning, he had not accepted that he will be serving time but now he is at peace and paying his dues. He is involved in projects and keeping himself busy and he has not stopped making music.” The friend says Brickz is a changed man. â€?"He has changed. He listens to more gospel music and started making gospel. He also sings in the choir; he has always been a good singer outside of kwaito and rapping. He will always be a kwaito artist, but gospel has kept him sane and thinking positively. His faith has improved, and he is wise and a spiritual guy. That is the Sipho that we all grew up with before the fame.”
