The South African Police Service feel confident that they are getting closer to resolving the murder of rapper Kiernan "AKA" Forbes and his friend Tebello "Tibz" Motsoane who were gunned down outside of a Durban restaurant on 10 February 2023. The police have reportedly made a breakthrough in the investigation.

MORE CLUES

Addressing media at a briefing yesterday at Tshedimosetso House in Hatfield, Tshwane, police Minister Bheki Cele says the KwaZulu Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has given information regarding the case. This is after the CCTV footage of the shooting emerged with two men seen in the video shooting the two men at close range and running past a satellite police station across Florida Road. He said: "The cars have been found, people have been identified, and even the firearm used was found," Cele, however, asked that the police be given time to continue with the investigation. "We would request that police are given the space and themselves must resist the push that might end up breaking their case even before they achieve the proper investigation," Cele said, adding that the National Joints Operational and Intelligence structure wants to strengthen security. "I want to thank communities who continue to support the work of the police by providing valuable information to the SAPS to assist in police investigations and those who bring forward information that assists the overall intelligence community," Cele concluded.

CONNECTING DOTS

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner previously shared that the investigation is still pending and that he hopes not to be questioned again. "The murder happened in a public place, there were many people that were involved and many phone calls that happened during the night and a video footage," Mkhwanazi said. "The team has already started with more than 6 TB of data. We downloaded more than 25 cell phones as we spoke, and the team is analysing every communication and data in those phones. It is all from people of interest that might contain information. Cell phones of people who might have been in the area or might have communicated with the deceased. Or any other people associated with the deceased." Mkhwanazi added that a number of people have been interviewed. "Those who might have been present during the incident, some not, and those of interest to us. We have identified a couple of vehicles that were used, some were used as getaways and some portals. Some might have been used by people after and we suspect to be suspects." The police also identified one firearm which was used in the murders. "We as SAPS have identified a few individuals that maybe after discussing with the NPA, we might start bringing them in," Mkhwanazi added that people should appreciate the work of the police who put effort into making investigations.
