Bafana Bafana players to receive R1 million bonus each for finishing third at Afcon

Bafana Bafana players will each walk away with R1 million after they took the third place at the African Nations Cup (Afcon) in Cote d'Ivoire after they beat Democratic Republic of Congo. The money will come from the $ 2,5m (R46.9m) the team will receive from Confederation of African Football (CAF) advancing to the semi-finals in the cup. FINISHING THIRD PLACE


Bafana Bafana beat Democratic Republic Congo 6-5 on penalties in the tournament in the third-place play-off on Saturday night. Captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams became the hero of the day after saving two penalties during the shootout. This was the second time that Williams became the hero after he saved penalties during shootout when the team was playing in the quarter-finals. Williams saved the final kick from DRC's Meschak Elia during sudden death to win the match for Mzansi. During the tournament, Williams saved six penalties in three shootouts and has kept five clean sheets. He walked away with the goalkeeper of the tournament last night.



AFCON MEDAL WINNERS


Nigeria defender Williams Troost-Ekong was named Player of the Tournament after netting three goals in the competition, while Ivory Coast's Simon Adingra was named Young Player of the Tournament. Emilio Nsue won the Golden Boot after ending the tournament on five goals for Equatorial Guinea. Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé, who was only appointed after the group stages received Best Coach of the Tournament after collecting four wins in the knockout stages. Finally, Bafana Bafana also walked away with the Fair Play Award and received their bronze medals in front of a packed Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara. The team will return to South Africa in the coming days after a tough campaign that began last month with a training camp in Stellenbosch.
