She is back! The last project Busiswa Gqulu released was called My Side of the Story. It was a full album where she featured Mr JazziQ, DJ Tunez, Suzy Eises, Dunnie, Bossanova and Oskido. She then took some years of not releasing music. "For me, it wasn't necessarily a gap because I was still performing despite me not releasing," she says. Her latest single is titled, Easy, featuring DJ Khao. "This song and this genre is inspired by what has been trending, but what I have been doing before with Gqom, I wanted something that would mix well with Gqom and Amapiano and DJ Khao came along and that's what he was doing. I really enjoyed experimenting with this sound," she says. "I don't want to obsess over the genres, but I think I add something to the South African musical landscape and can hold my own on any stage, anywhere in the world, and also on any station and platform."
FAMILY BONDS
Busiswa also lost her father in January and due to this, has connected with her family. "I connected with my sisters and brother, who are my father's kids. I have also been able to spend a lot of time with them and their children, which for me has been a blessing," she says. "I also have been spending a lot of time with my son, who probably thinks I am unemployed. He even tells me that when I go to work, I should not go for too long because we are always together. At his age, it has been beautiful to just take him around with me everywhere I go. So, in this time, I have enjoyed nurturing relationships that matter to me," she says.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
During her hiatus, Busiswa also lost weight and focused on her health and wellness. "I think at some point, I was weighing about 101kg - at my heaviest, and right now I am at 70 kg," she says. "So, I lost about 30 kg in three years," she says. "The motivation behind the weight loss was for me to be a more present mother. It was to be able to be active and involved in my son's life. But also being single. I wanted to be sexy and look at myself in the mirror and say, ?Yes girl!' and be excited to go out, try new clothes on and evolve my style," she adds. "My style has taken a very experimental turn and I enjoy wearing what I want and what I dream of and this has been good for me."
LOSING MUSIC
A few years ago, before her hiatus, Busiswa's home was broken into, and her hard drive was stolen with hundreds of songs. "I never recovered the music. It was the only thing that was lost and I've had to create afresh. I haven't bent over backward to try and recover it. The case is open and there. I believe the truth will come to me and will come out as to who, what and why. But I have just been creating and I have a lot of music. As much as I lost hard drives, a lot of the stuff saved on the cloud," she says. "I know that God has placed that gift inside of me and no one can take it away. I can do it all over again."
FUTURE PLANS
She is currently working on a full project. "There's a project that can be expected, but I will just give it time I am not rushing to drop a full project, I think singles are working for me," she says. "I've been in the studio with people like Lady Du, MaWhoo, Deepsen and KingTalkzin." She also has some international features. " I've also done some international tracks with my favourite artists from West Africa and the UK, so I'm hoping that there will be a lot of international features that are going to be released included in the project or just singles. I've also been contributing to other people's projects, myself, hopefully, those that will come out to the world." She would also like to work with people like Yemi Alade and Burna Boy. "Locally I would love to work with Black Motion as well as acts like the electronic and afro tech acts like Da Capo." We really are waiting with bated breath to get the hit that will make us Eaze into the silly season.
