Awaiting trial prisoner Dumisani Respect Chauke (32), who escaped from police detention in Saselami police station in Limpopo alongside two other inmates on Thursday, has been re-arrested. Chauke who is facing two charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was re-arrested on Sunday morning at Madonsi village.
Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba said police officers who were on duty heard a commotion in the holding cells. "It was around 03:26 AM on Thursday when they were conducting a routine of hourly patrol duties when they heard an unusual noise from the cells. Upon arrival in the cells, they discovered that three of the inmates escaped through the roof," said Mashaba. He said police immediately activated a manhunt for the three escapees.
Mashaba added that the police are still looking for Mikateko Ronald Chauke (33) and Jimmy Matirhele (32) who were both arrested for burglary. Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has welcomed Chauke's re-arrest. Hadebe has also ordered the police to work with speed to recapture the remaining suspects. She further urged the community to provide any positive leads to ensure the swift apprehension of the escapees.
