This year, he turns 54 years old. He has been running his record label 999 Music since 1994. It has made some of the biggest stars an in the country and created opportunities for many. This year, to celebrate his birthday, businessman and to make almost a three-decade milestone, Arthur Mafokate hands over 999 Music to his son Arthur Junior Lesego Mafokate.

HANDING OVER HIS BUSINESS

Arthur will take a back seat and AJ’s new position will be under his watch as a chairman and supervisor. Arthur says AJ who is also a DJ and music producer will be allowed to restart the company on his terms and plans, with the assistance of a very experienced team behind him. While Arthur is giving him creative reign, he hopes that he is ready. "Only God knows whether he is ready or not," Arthur tells ZiMoja. "Was I ready when I started my school days? We will never get to know unless we try."

TAKING OVER

Arthur says AJ will be taking over with immediate effect and will start having interviews to hire his staff as the new CEO of 999 Music. Arthur has been toying around with the idea of passing the reigns over to his son but was equally aware that he was still at school. "And since he has completed his degree and his passion for music is still there, this might be a big stepping stone for his future," Arthur says. "I feel like since I don’t have much to do, I might as well spend time mentoring him. I have mentored a lot of great administrators in the music business and why not try him too? But only he can answer what changes will he bring to the table. But my expectations include having to adapt to changes and innovations in the music business as well as new policies," Arthur adds. "I expect growth, revival, and sustainability but I am excited as this is a legacy, and like any parent, I want to see my legacy restored one way or the other."
