The trucking business seems to be under attack. This is after eleven trucks between KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga were torched within hours of each other. In the first incident on Sunday, six trucks were torched on the N3 toll route on Van Reenen's Pass by unknown armed men. In the second incident on the same day, five trucks were torched in Waterval Boven in Mpumalanga.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala confirmed the incident on Monday morning. "Five trucks were set alight on Sunday evening at Waterval Boven. We don't know the motive for the incident. The information at our disposal is that two vehicles, a Toyota Hilux bakkie, and a sedan, stopped the trucks just before the Waterval Boven tunnel and set them alight without telling the drivers the motive," Mohlala added that the drivers were instructed to take their personal belongings and vacate the trucks.
He said no arrests have been made.
All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied SA's KwaZulu-Natal secretary Gugu Sokhela said she doesn't know if any of their members are involved. "We don't know anything in terms of factionalism within our organisation. Our organisation is as united as ever. Regarding the torching of the trucks now, we cannot confirm yet whether it is our members. But members are angry regarding the government not doing the right thing," Sokhela said. During the ANC NEC meeting on Sunday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said he was concerned about the incidents as they have a negative impact on the economy. "It is almost like economic sabotage because six trucks on the great artery of our economy being torched is concerning,' he said, adding that the intelligence agencies are going to give him a report on the incidents. "It is not acceptable that trucks and facilities that are enhancing our economy are attacked willy-nilly just like that. It is a real concern," Ramaphosa added.
