Former Economic Freedom Fighters Dali Mpofu has joined a list of party leaders who have left the party for the uMkhonto weSizwe Party. Mpofu made the announcement this morning on SABC's Morning Live. Mpofu, who served as the red berets chairperson for five years between 2014 and 2019, said he felt free to announce his departure as his membership with the EFF had lapsed.

THE ONLY VEHICLE TO ACHIEVE UNITY

He joins the likes of former EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu, former EFF MPs Busisiwe Mkhwebane and Mzwanele Manyi, and former EFF Limpopo chairperson Tshilidzi Maraga, who left the party for MK. Speaking to the SABC, Mpofu said he has joined the MK Party after a lot of soul searching because he believes that it is the vehicle through which the much-needed black and progressive unity can be achieved. "I'm doing so not necessarily to reject any other organisation, but at this point in time, in November 2024, I am of the view that the vehicle through which we should drive that unity is uMkhonto weSizwe.

NO BAD BLOOD

Asked if he had informed party president Julius Malema, Mpofu said he had not done so but that he would reach out as a courtesy. "There is no need to inform anyone at any particular time. There is no bad blood. I'll extend that courtesy after this announcement. I am sure our paths will meet in this difficult journey for unity. There is nothing personal at all. There is nothing being done against a particular person; it is something that I am doing for my people," Mpofu said. In what looked like a response to Mpofu's announcement, Malema took to X and said he remained standing. "Only two more of your favourites remain, and the list will be finalised. They sing beautifully and are always willing to pose for pictures and sign roll calls, but remember, their souls are long gone. To prevent any potential hurt, it's crucial to heed the guidance of the leadership. We remain standing and are not going anywhere under a criminal syndicate," he wrote. The EFF has not officially responded to Mphofu leaving the party.
