An angry mob from Stjwetla in Alexandra cornered four unknown men and burnt them to death. SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said around 20:30 on Tuesday night, the police received a complaint of murder at Setjwetla from the Bramley Policing Area.
Nevhuhulwi says that, "Upon arrival, the members found a group of people, who pelted police with stones and refused them near the scene. Back-up was called and that is when the group dispersed and police discovered that four men had been burnt to death." He said the circumstances surrounding the incident was unclear at this stage and no suspects have been arrested.
Gauteng SAPS Provincial Commissioner Elias Mawela has called on residents to stop taking the law into their own hands after recent crime statistics showed a spike in vigilante killings. When Mawela presented the third quarter crime statistics for Gauteng he said at least 102 people were killed in vigilante violence or so-called mob justice in that timeframe.
"The areas where these mob justices are happening, are usually informal settlements without any basic services. The roads are not even accessible for us, but we call upon the people to say they must have a little bit of confidence in the criminal justice system."
