Security guard becomes a hero after helping a woman give birth to twins

Simphiwe Ndlovu says he is happy the babies were delivered safely

A security guard became the hero of the day when he helped a woman deliver twins outside a clinic in Nkandla, KwaZulu Natal. Simphiwe Ndlovu (38) from kwaNxamalala Reserve is still finding it hard to believe that he managed to help a pregnant woman give birth to not one but two babies.

PREGNANT WOMAN DIDN'T GET HELP AT THE CLINIC

Ndlovu, who works at the clinic as a guard, told ZiMoja that he was off duty on the day of the incident. "It was around 7pm last Friday when I decided to go buy matches and candles at a local shop for my place. When I was walking back to my place, which is a few metres from my rented room, I noticed a car parked outside and there was a man and woman screaming at the gate asking for help," Ndlovu said. "Since I stay close to the clinic and it happened that I work there, I decided to go closer and try and help them. I called the guard that was on duty and told him to go to the nurse's cottages to ask them to reopen the clinic and help the woman give birth as she was in labour. The cottages where the nurse's stays are inside the clinic. They told my colleague that they had knocked off and they had plans and directed the woman to Nkandla Hospital," he added.

ORDERED NOT TO TALK TO THE MEDIA

He said as he and his colleagues were begging the nurses to help when the woman's water broke and she said the babies were coming. "The woman's boyfriend didn't know what to do. I just used my general knowledge on how the woman must lie when giving birth. I have never done it before, but I have watched movies where I've seen people giving birth. I delivered the first baby and I was shocked when I saw that another baby's head after the first one," he said. Ndlovu said that the clinic management has tried to talk to him about the incident and asked him not to speak about it in the media. "I don't see why they are instructing me not to talk about this experience. I'm just happy that I helped where I could and I was excited to know that when the mother and babies arrived at Nkandla Hospital, the babies were declared healthy," he said. KZN Health Department spokesperson Mdu Ncalane said they will only comment on the matter once they investigate.
