Woman accused of killing relatives for insurance money remains behind bars

Agnes Setshwantsho will remain behind bars

The bail application of Agnes Segomotsi Setshwantsho, accused of orchestrating deaths of her relatives for insurance payouts is expected to continue tomorrow at the Mmabatho Magistrates Court in North West. She is currently facing a charge of murder, two counts of fraud and defeating the course of justice. She is alleged to have taken out policies for over 40 members of her extended family. Police are also investigating her as a prime suspect in the murder of her son, husband and two daughters.

HER HEALTH CONDITION HAS IMPROVED

Setshwantsho was arrested in November in a joint operation by police and an insurance company. She applied for bail soon after her arrest and her bail hearing has been ongoing since then. Today, the state called on its second witness, Keneilwe Senokwane, a nurse working at  Mahikeng Prison where the accused is detained. Senokwane is testifying on Setshwantsho's medical condition. When applying for bail, she claimed that the facility was in no position to detain her as they did not have a refrigerator to store her diabetes medication. In an affidavit, she said she has high cholesterol and type two diabetes. She said to keep her condition under control, she needed to inject herself three times a day. "I don't think at the police cells where I am kept, they can store my medication. My health is cause for concern" she said. Senokwane testified that the accused's condition has improved so much that she no longer takes insulin shots and only uses pills now. "The doctor she consulted with determined that the shots were causing her sugar level to remain consistently low. Since her medication was altered, we have not experienced any issues," Senokwane said.

A FLIGHT RISK

The police spent months tracing and tracking the accused; therefore, the State is opposing bail, arguing that she is a flight risk. It is alleged that during the time the police were tracing her, she was in the process of securing another insurance payouts for the death of her son in Centurion. Setshwantsho was arrested in November 2023 in a joint operation by police and an insurance company. The State has concluded its case, and both parties will argue tomorrow. She remains in custody.
