Legendary actor Darlington Michaels, who is best known for playing the role of Georgie 'Papa G' Zamdela on SABC 3 soapie Isidingo, has passed away. The icon has not been well in weeks.

ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL STRUGGLING TO BREATHE

Last week, ZiMoja reported that the legendary actor has not been feeling well for weeks and was admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto last week. An actor who spoke to ZiMoja on condition of anonymity last week said Michaels reached out to him complaining about his sickness and not being able to make a living as the industry has rejected him. The veteran, who started his acting career on stage, was struggling to breathe when he was admitted to the hospital. He reportedly passed away at his home yesterday. The flamboyant actor joined Isidingo in 1998 when the soapie first aired their first episode.

LEGENDARY ACTOR

He was known for wearing floral shirts in his role, spoke a lot of tsotsi taal and wore many gold chains and rings. Michaels began his acting career on stage under the guidance of the Father of Theatre, Gibson Kente. He also appeared in Chandies, a Mzansi Magic sitcom, in 2012. He played the role of a con artist Daliza in the sitcom.

TRIBUTES

Tributes have been pouring in for the actor since his passing was confirmed on Friday night. The SABC said in a statement late last night that they were deeply saddened by Michaels's passing. "His immense contribution to the entertainment industry will forever be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Michaels family, friends and fans," the public broadcaster said. Actro Spaces also paid tribute to the legend. "A true icon whose talent and legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of many. His immense contribution to the industry shaped South African television and left a profound impact on all who had the privilege to witness his artistry."
