ActionSA has announced Zwakele Mncwango as its premier candidate for KwaZulu-Natal ahead of the 2024 national elections. The announcement was made by party leader Herman Mashaba in Umhlanga Rocks, Durban, today.
Mncwango, KZN DA's former leader, however, conceded that they would need to form a coalition and decisively ruled out the ANC as a potential partner. Mashaba lauded Mncwango as a hard worker who is committed to public service. His influence in the province became evident last month when he wrote to President Cyril Ramaphosa asking him to review the decision by the KZN government leadership to host the South African Music Awards, which he said would cost taxpayers over R28 million. Soon after this, the MEC for Economic Development in the province Siboniso Duma announced that the provincial government was pulling out of the event. Speaking ahead of the voter registration weekend, Mashaba said that they are looking at forming a coalition government in the province. "Our role as an opposition is to dominate and hold the government accountable," Mashaba said.
Mncwango thanked the party's leadership for having confidence in him. "This task I'm being given means we need to be on the ground, means things need to change. There should be a focus on an ActionSA government. As ActionSA in this province, we say our priority would be a qualification for all South Africans. Education is very important," he said.
