ANC Women's League conference to be postponed to a later date

Khuselo Diko

ANC Women’s League member of the National Task Team Khusela Diko says there’s a high possibility of adjourning the conference to a later date.

She said this today at Nasrec where the conference was taking place.

"The Commission will take about three to four hours to calculate once that has been done, will take the nomination for additional members and we are seeing the voting taking into the evening perhaps those results coming out tomorrow morning," she said.

ITEMS COVERED

She said the conference managed to cover a number of items. "All the discussion documents have been presented, the financial report, organisational report, political report by mom Baleka (Mbete)," she said. Diko said some of the delegates haven't slept adequately for two days.

"So we expect them to go through those documents to deliberate on these matters, adopt resolutions and wait for the president to close the conference."

She added the second leg of the conference may be hybrid event.

SECOND LEG

"There is a possibility of the second leg of conference that may be hybrid to tie up loose ends if they still remain. The pressure to wrap is to allow delegates to travel."Four of the top five positions except that of the Treasurer General are contested by three candidates.

Former ANCWL President Bathabile Dlamini, former Secretary Sisisi Tolashe and KwaZulu-Natal's Thembeka Mchunu are contesting the position of the President.

Tolashe received resounding support from delegates on the first day of the conference, with 1564 votes while Dlamini and Mchunu received 285 and 796 nominations respectively.

Another closely contested position is that of the Deputy President with Lungi Gcabashe, Bernice Swarts and the current Deputy NCOP Chairperson Sylvia Lucas vying for it.

For the Secretary General, the current member of the National Task Team (NTT) Nokuthula Nqaba, Lydia Moroane-Zitha and Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe are contesting for the position.

Deputy Secretary General nominees are Makoma Makhurupetje, Winnie Ngwenya and Dina Pule. Treasure General is contested by Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae and Manketsi Thlape.

The ANC Youth League which was held recently couldn't conclude on the three days that was set for it. President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver closing address this evening.
